The Swabian Castle, together with the Cathedral, is the main symbol of Termoli and characterizes the entire medieval village, made up of narrow, winding streets and well-preserved houses. As with most of the defensive walls, the construction of the castle dates back to the 13th century by Frederick II of Swabia. It is a fortified brick building, with a quadrangular plan, circular turrets at the corners and a large central tower. The castle was then rebuilt after the earthquake of 1456 and subsequently restored several times.
Thanks to its position on the coast, almost overlooking the Adriatic, the castle is particularly scenic: the ideal backdrop for splendid souvenir photos from Termoli, where the scent of the sea can be breathed everywhere. Even today, the compact and powerful mass of both the tower and the entire castle inevitably refers to distant times, to epic battles against pirates and other enemies.
Some rooms of the castle host the municipal art gallery, home to conferences and events. Finally, from here it is possible to enjoy a splendid view of the snow-capped mountains of nearby Abruzzo.
