Campomarino boasts a rich history dating back to Roman times. You can visit the archaeological area of Lucita, where you can see the remains of a Roman villa and an amphitheater. Other historic attractions include the Church of Santa Maria a Mare, dating back to the 12th century, and the Aragonese Castle, dating back to the 13th century.

Important archaeological discoveries in the vicinity of the current town center indicate that the territory of Campomarino has been inhabited since very remote times. The latest findings suggest a settlement already in the Bronze Age in the Arcore area. There is a story and a legend about the foundation of Campomarino. It seems that some Albanians, after the defeat suffered by the Turkish assault, came to Molise and founded various colonies, including Campomarino. Legend, however, tells that the town was founded by Diomedes, a Homeric hero who, after the Trojan War, settled in the area with his wife, daughter of King Daunus, and was buried in the Tremiti islands which are therefore called Diomedee.
